Gwen Adora Talks to Vice Canada about Online Sex Work during COVID-19 Pandemic
(Toronto, Canada / April 02, 2020) -- Independent content creator Gwen Adora was interviewed by Motherboard, Vice Canada’s technology section.
“Making Money on OnlyFans Is a Lot Harder Than You Think,” written by staff writer Anya Zoledziowski addresses the spike in interest for pursuing online adult content in the wake of coronavirus (COVID-19) job losses, along with comedic takes on starting online sex work out of boredom. Adora highlights the frustration herself and other creators have when it comes to people assuming their jobs are easy.
“The adult industry works harder than any other - not just to get paid - but in our hustle to survive when the internet and society oppress us,” says Adora. “It’s disheartening to login to social media and see locals, and mainstream influencers, like James Charles, joking about entering into our industry because they’re bored or need to make quick cash. Camming or running an OnlyFans aren’t fun activities we play around with - these are our jobs and careers.”
Not wanting to discourage people from entering the industry, Adora told Zoledziowski she just wants people to recognize how much work it takes, along with a message in support of in-person sex workers during this time. “I’m privileged because I work fully online,” Adora said, which is why she thinks it’s important to support colleagues while they transition to online services because of COVID-19 social isolation protocols.
